THE ROLE

Matterport is looking for an experienced leader who can drive cross-discipline product development, fully owning our hardware product roadmap. As a key leader in the company, this person will have influence over our research investments, lead all aspects of the technical development for our hardware products and solutions, and ensure overall design quality for those products for their lifetime. The Head of Hardware Engineering needs to be an analytical, yet creative superstar - someone who can inspire a diverse group of engineers with a compelling technical vision while understanding the business trade offs required to realize that vision. The right candidate will have the curiosity to explore new technologies and drive a culture of innovation along with a capability to deliver predictably. Matterport is poised for incredible growth and we need someone to lead a hardware strategy to drive and support that.

A successful candidate will be able to lead multiple engineering disciplines including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, firmware development, imaging, and test. They must be someone who can confidently work with senior executives, collaborate effectively cross functionally and within matrixed teams and knows how to drive to deliver results.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multiple complex hardware programs from concept through design to production readiness
  • Drive direction, architecture, implementation and validation of electrical, mechanical, imaging, and firmware systems for our camera/hardware product roadmap
  • Build a strong team that meets our high performance standards and goals across multiple disciplines
  • Act as technical mentor and day-to-day supervisor for the team
  • Lead the team to ensure that career paths are outlined and skills are enhanced
  • Create/Reinforce interdisciplinary connections with technical leads and managers cross-functionally within the hardware organization and with the software, supply chain, finance, and other teams in Matterport
  • Develop strong partnerships with relevant companies to drive partners to meet Matterport needs
  • Define budget, resources and schedule for each project/program implementation and provide concise status updates

Requirements

  • BS or MS degree in at least one relevant engineering or equivalent experience preferred
  • 15+ years of hands-on experience in market relevant hardware design, development and project management in a both large and small-to-medium consumer electronics organizations
  • Deep technical expertise and architectural experience in one or more disciplines core to Matterport's products
  • Thorough understanding of the product development and NPI process
  • Experience in bringing a product to market and ability to collaborate with Marketing and Sales teams to do so.
  • Strong interdisciplinary leadership experience in electrical, mechanical, regulatory, prototyping, validation, and test areas
  • Able to implement an engineering strategy for a major business unit that balances operations support requirements with engineering development programs
  • Passion for leading, mentoring and inspiring strong, talented engineers as a co-worker, actively involved in day-to-day engineering
  • Ability to identify and recruit top talent for the Hardware team
  • Curious about our business and confident and responsive working with executives
  • Highly collaborative, inclusive, creative and flexible
  • Experience defining OKRs and managing using KPIs
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally as necessary (when safe and permitted)
