Principal Technical Program Manager - Cloud Adoption

Company: Amazon.com, Inc.
Location: Sunnyvale

Job Description:

Amazon's eCommerce Infrastructure Services organization is looking for passionate, results-oriented, inventive and influential technical program managers to lead our worldwide efforts to define and drive a secure, cloud-embracing enterprise development environment for the tens of thousands of developers that build technology for Amazon's Retail customers.

As a Principal Technical Program Manager, you will collaborate closely with other technical leaders across both AWS and our Consumer business, driving enterprise requirements into AWS services. As AWS' largest customer, you will help them build business cases for new public-facing capabilities, and in some cases, drive engineering teams within your own group to build those AWS technologies yourself. You will manage development of enterprise cloud technologies that extend AWS primitives in ways that can be later adopted by AWS and their other enterprise customers as needed.

This group is also responsible for a range of critical, software development frameworks that form the very foundation of Amazon's distributed web-services architecture, used by tens of thousands of remote services that comprise our Retail businesses, as well as forming the foundation of many of the largest and most visible public AWS services. Almost every corner of Amazon's technology stack, from subsidiaries like Audible and Zappos, to our Consumer Retail Websites around the world (www.amazon.*), Kindle and AWS itself all depend, on our technology in one way or another to build their software and run their business. As a Principal TPM, you will be responsible for owning and driving the vision for revolutionizing our frameworks and the way in which the entire engineering community within Amazon's retail division builds web and backend applications.

In addition to building the technology extensions to AWS you will play a pivotal role in driving a new cultural and technology direction for our consumer business, moving the larger engineering community for Amazon's consumer business away from proprietary service based technology implementations and towards embracing those native AWS solutions such as Lambda and ECS and making other AWS services easier to use and thus a more natural choice for components like security, storage, deployment etc.

You will have experience leading diverse, large, highly technical cross-company-large-scale distributed technical architecture/cultural changes, influencing engineers and engineering leaders at all levels, and defining engineering best practices as it relates to the secure adoption of and migration to AWS technologies.

You will need to be able to communicate clearly with senior executive leaders across the company as easily as you can convey key technical ideas and directions to engineers at all levels. You will have strong bias for action and a history of delivering the right results, a critical asset to ensure that Amazon will be able to continue to leverage new cloud technologies as they become available and to keep abreast of other innovation that's happening across our businesses outside of AWS.

You will be a Customer Advocate - you will represent our internal customers as a key stakeholder and advocate for their goals around adopting AWS as a platform. This is an opportunity to inform AWS' roadmap by identifying technical blockers and new feature opportunities. You must be able to engage with both technical and business teams to collect and refine requirements, prioritize incoming work requests, and ensure all committed work is delivered on time. As such, you must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and must be capable of tracking multiple concurrent projects, negotiating resourcing changes, and driving consensus.

  • Experience managing projects across cross functional teams, building sustainable processes and coordinating release schedules
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering experience
  • 7+ years of technical program management experience
  • 5+ years technical program management experience, preferably with an online or cloud focus.
  • Strong customer experience judgment, with a track record of delivering valuable customer-facing features.
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple sophisticated projects and competing priorities.
  • Proven track record of delivering results in large, cross-functional initiatives.
  • Superior analytical and quantitative skills; experience using data and metrics to test theories, confirm assumptions, and measure success.
  • Proven ability to identify, analyze, and solve ambiguous problems with an extreme attention to detail.
  • Thrives in a high-energy, fast-paced environment where tactical and strategic initiatives are driven in parallel.
  • Experience owning public business initiatives from start through launch.
  • Experience leading diverse, large, highly technical cross-company-large-scale architecture and cultural changes, influencing engineers and engineering leaders at all levels.
  • Experience defining engineering best practices as it relates to the secure adoption of and migration to cloud technologies.
  • Experience in representing and advocating for a variety of critical customers and stakeholders during executive-level prioritization and planning.
  • Experience bridging technical and business teams to collect and refine requirements, prioritize incoming work requests, and ensure all committed work is delivered on time.
