of minimally invasive care. Job Description Primary Function of
Position: Accessories serve as the interface between other aspects
of the da Vinci system and enable safe and effective robot-assisted
surgery. They may be reusable or single-use medical devices
(consumables), with yearly volumes from the hundreds to the
millions. Our customers interact directly with accessories in every
surgical procedure, and they serve a critical role in customer
satisfaction and patient outcomes. The Design Mechanical Engineer
will help identify performance, cost, capacity and reliability
improvements for Intuitive surgical accessories, and complete the
development, documentation, and verification of these improvements.
The successful candidate will have both the technical depth to
resolve complex mechanical, materials and manufacturing design
issues and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to
drive projects to implementation. A strong sense of responsibility
and project ownership is required as well as a commitment to high
product quality. Roles and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the lead R&D engineer in cross-functional project
teams to design, develop and verify modifications to surgical
accessories.
- Investigate and determine root cause of both latent and
emerging design, manufacturing, or material defects
- Develop, implement, test and document solutions for these
defects according to corporate standard and departmental operating
procedures
- Investigate clinical requirements and risks
- Create and maintain engineering drawings and documentation in
accordance to stringent Design Control activities.
- Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of field
and manufacturing issues
- Identify solutions that meet both customer and business needs
- Support design changes, alternate material qualification,
improve manufacturability
- Support the CAPA processes and quality/regulatory audits as
required
- Establish individual goals consistent with overall project
goals Qualifications Skill/Job Requirements:
- BSME required, MSME preferred. Minimum 5 years of experience
with plastics, and/or disposable medical products
- Proven experience in a fast paced, high transaction environment
with project ownership and decision making
- Comfortable with all phases of the product development
lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification,
qualification, and transfer to manufacturing
- Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms;
SolidWorks preferred
- Proficient communicator relating to verification and validation
testing
- Hands-on engineering with the proven ability to work well in a
team environment
- Strength in design analysis, decision making and technical
strategy
- Mechanical design and analysis skills, including statics,
dynamics, kinematics, strength of materials and stress
analysis
- Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes
(including injection molding, extrusion, heat staking, ultrasonic
welding, thermoforming, thermoset molding, machining, heat sealing,
heat staking, transfer molding, pad printing, laser marking, laser
welding, etc.)
- Familiarity with small part assembly, manufacturing, and
automation
- Comfortable operating measurement and test equipment
- Strong understanding of component selection criteria, and
design for reliability and manufacturability
- Medical product experience strongly preferred (including
knowledge of sterilization and biocompatibility processes and
designing for these processes)
- Proficient at process development and creation of assembly
instructions
- Ability to travel up to 10% time
- A real excitement to learn and get to the bottom of tough
technical problems
- A passion for creating robust and reliable products Additional
