Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a talented Metrology Engineer to join our team in Sunnyvale, CA. The primary responsibility of this position is to serve as the trusted advisor for Operations through the following functional responsibilities: Assessing existing and potential measurement systems, technical support during start-up activities and provide ongoing strategic support via on-site Quality, Cost, and Logistics, being recognized as the expert in Measurement Systems. Management audits, driving implementation of Lean principles,. Evaluate new inspection methods and procedures. Use statistics to analyze measurement standards and processes. Collaborate with Engineering and Manufacturing to assure proper process control standards are in place and continuously monitor key manufacturing processes for improvement opportunities. Ensure that Quality Control has adequate people, training, tooling, fixturing, and equipment. Provide the technical leadership role as the Metrology champion for Sunnyvale site and assure technical development to adequately meet capacity and evolving manufacturing needs based on analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements. Evaluate and develop new measurement system technological capability to meet requirements for Northrop Grumman Marine Systems.--

• Develops and evaluates systems that measure characteristics of objects such as length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, luminous intensity, and derived units of physical or chemical measure: Identifies magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms.
• Redesigns or adjusts measurement capability to minimize errors.
• Develops inspection methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements.
• Prepare technical reports, trend, equipment performance data, and resolve identified gaps or adverse trends. Support Metrology Program and Quality System elements (OOTs, KPIs, Training, etc.)
• Advises others on methods of resolving measurement problems and exchanges information with other metrology personnel through participation in government and industrial standardization committees and professional societies.
• Review and approve out of tolerance (OOT) investigations for Manufacturing and Critical Systems instrumentation
• Support Quality Department for internal/external audits, generating reports, etc. Specific Job Responsibilities
  • Provide in-depth expertise in the area of dimensional inspection/ GDAT. This includes the ability to communicate and teach measurement concepts to production and inspection operators.
  • Participate in startup design reviews and First Time Planning Reviews (FTPR)
  • Review and approve new instrument requests, criticality assessments, and other related Metrology documentation. Ensure new devices being added to process systems are meeting set standards and are designed with the correct critical attributes to meet the intended use of the device.
  • Complete change control, Quality CAPA, and Safety CAPA tasks related to Metrology
  • Support and/or lead capital projects as needed. MAQEA Qualifications Basic Qualifications:
    • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
    • Must be able to work independently and make sound judgments regarding work methods and tools
    • Developing knowledge of the basic principles in various engineering disciplines. Ability to solve routine design and engineering tasks with minor assistance
    • Must be proficient in a variety of mathematical disciplines and be able to work with all standards of engineering units of measurement
    • Must have good verbal/written communication skills
    • Good computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Word, Projects, and Excel
    • A Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline with a minimum of nine (9) years of relevant experience, OR A Master's Degree in an Engineering discipline with a minimum of seven (7) years of experience.
    • Expert with GD&T and Metrology Equipment (FARO, CMM, Laser Tracker) Preferred Qualifications:
      • Ability to discuss technical or project management issues, both verbally and in written form
      • Experience in heavy machinery industry.
      • Experience in engineering in highly-regulated manufacturing environments.
      • Deep expertise in one of the category Fabrication, Casting, Machining
      • Ability to quickly and continuously learn new skill sets
      • Advanced knowledge and application of sound project management skills: planning, organizing, follow-through, and control
